چکیده

Differential scanning calorimetry measurements have been performed on elemental Se as well as on GexSe94 xIn6 (x 1⁄4 4, 8, and 11 at%) and on GeySe88 yIn12 (y 1⁄4 5, 7, and 9 at%) chalcogenide glasses. From the cooling rate dependence of the fictive temperature, the apparent activation energies, Dh*, and the fragility indices, m, as defined in the strong–fragile glass-forming liquid concept, are determined. It is found that, in Ge–Se–In system, there is an evolution from strong (m 1⁄4 67) to fragile (m 1⁄4 116) glass-forming liquids. The dependence of ‘m’ on the mean-coordination number, Z, is also obtained. This dependence is rationalized by assuming that, in this glassy alloy system, there is a tendency for the formation of In2Se3 clusters. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Bond Strength-Coordination Number Fluctuations and the Fragility of Some Ion Conducting Oxide and Chalcogenide Glass Forming Liquids

The concept of fragility has been used widely to characterize the temperature dependence of the viscosity of glass forming liquids. According to a model proposed by one of the authors, the fragility is determined by the relaxation of structural units that form the melt, and is described in terms of the bond strength, coordination number and their fluctuations. In the present contribution, the m...

Analysis of Cooperativity in Metallic Glass Forming Liquids

The relation between fragility and cooperativity of atomic motion in bulk metallic glass forming liquids is studied based on the bond strength-coordination number fluctuation model. The model describes the temperature dependence of the viscosity in terms of the mean values of the bond strength, coordination number and their fluctuations of the structural units that form the melt. According to t...

Pressure dependence of the fragility in metallic glass forming liquids: Predictions from a theoretical model and materials properties correlations

By studying the pressure dependence of the fragility, it is expected that new horizons will open to understand the relaxation behaviour of supercooled liquids. However, as far as the authors are informed, no study has been performed on pressure dependence of the fragility in bulk metallic glass forming systems. In the present study, such dependence is investigated based on materials properties ...

Microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics based on Se-As-Ge system nucleated by Sn

In particular, chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics are new materials that exhibit good transparency in infrared region (0.8-12µm). We can overcome the main weakness of these glasses by improving the hardness through controlling crystallization. In this paper, we report results of a study on chalcogenide glasses in the ternary system of As-Se-Ge with nominal composition of Snx (Se...

Superstrong nature of covalently bonded glass-forming liquids at select compositions.

Variation of fragility (m) of specially homogenized Ge(x)Se(100-x) melts is established from complex specific heat measurements and shows that m(x) has a global minimum at an extremely low value (m = 14.8(0.5)) in the 21.5% < x < 23% range of Ge. Outside of that compositional range, m(x) then increases first rapidly and then slowly to about m = 25-30. By directly mapping melt stoichiometry as a...
